The Swedish Research Council is also developing a tool for registerforskning.se that will enable efficient searching and matching of information on metadata in registers.

The metadata tool will provide a quick, quality-assured overview of the information that is available and can be linked from various registers held by different authorities. We are currently testing the tool, which is only available in Swedish for the time being.

As part of its Government mandate, the Swedish Research Council maintains a continuous dialogue with Statistics Sweden and the National Board of Health and Welfare primarily regarding ways of improving access to registers for research purposes. In the long term, the work aims to increase the quality of metadata and the possibilities for reuse.

The work will enable register holders to streamline their statistical output based on increased metadata quality and the possibility of reusing metadata. Researchers will therefore have access to a greater quantity of more detailed metadata.

FACTS:
In order for register-based research to be permitted, it must also comply with a number of legal regulations governing how personal data are processed, how data are protected, and the security required when handling and using register data. This legislation also imposes restrictions on the transfer of personal data from Sweden to other countries, especially to non-EU/EEA countries. Read more under Law and ethics
